Honey Bee Fixed Pitch V2 - DD Tail Mod
« on: January 26, 2011, 10:00:00 AM »
For those of you that find the original tail motor is weak and short lived, there is an easy drop in upgrade for the HBFP V2.  To tell the truth, it should have come with this motor from the factory.  The original tail design uses a motor with a gear assembly so it has the power to turn the huge tail rotor.  When you look at this CP3 DD (Direct Drive) upgrade, you will notice how much smaller the rotor is than the original.  Keep in mind that looks can be very deceiving.  The direct drive is exactly like you would think.  There is no gearing since the rotor is mounted directly to the motor shaft.  So basically the rotor turns the same speed as the motor, which is MUCH faster than stock.  It turns so much faster that it more than compensates for the smaller rotor.  You will notice a great increase in tail performance with this.

Here is a photo that shows the differences in rotor size (small one is the CP3):

Here are the two motors (the longer one is the CP3):

And the Heatsinks (Larger one is CP3):

On the left you will see the parts needs for the CP3 drop in.  On the right is the original parts you will need to remove.

So you will remove the allen grub that hold the silver collar on and remove the tail shaft, motor and gears.  Don't forget to remove the two bearings since you will not use them on the upgrade.  It will shave off a little weight to help keep the CG the same.

Nice comparison.

Liked the bearing idea  :130:

Can you put the tail weights too? for cp3 with fin without bearings, for stock with fin with bearings ?

If you mean photos, then I do not have those parts to photograph.  I also do not have a scale to take precise measurements.

You will notice that there are (+) and (-) designated terminals on the CP3 motor.  You will need to wire it up backwards for it to function correctly on the HBFP V2.  If you wire it wrong you can flip the connector on the 4 in 1 though.  You will not use the 2 screws for the old motor as they are just a tad too small.  The screws for the motor will be in the CP3 rotor package.  There are also 2 allen grubs in that package that go on each side of the collar.

Here it is installed:

Notice the bearings are removed:

Oh, yeah.  My tail boom mod, but I think many people have done this also.  A $5 dollar clearance carbon fiber arrow at Wally World (aka: Wal-Mart).  It makes 2 tail booms.

WOW I'm sure glad I looked at this post. I've been planing on doing this tail mod and have read several post about it but I don't recall any of them saying to hook the motor up backwards! Guess I need to pay closer attentions. Thanks for the great post.

I'm glad it worked out for you.  I have seen some posts out there about the mod, but pictures say so much more.  I thought I would also fill in what some folks tend to think the beginners already know.  If you are like me, there is no way I'll go back to the original tail motor.

Take Care,
Tech Diver

Ringbutt,   :laugh25:  Your name there got me laughing a bit.

I didn't remember reading about the wiring either, so I wired red to (+) just like I normally would.  When I went to take off the little bee went spinning faster than a tornado through a trailer park.

Just remember that the main rotor spins clockwise, so the heli frame will get torqued counter-clockwise.  This means your tail rotor would have to push the tail left if you are in a tail-in orientation (clockwise).  If you wire it wrong, then you can reverse the tail connection on the 4 in 1 instead of re-solder.  I re-soldered because that is just how I am.

This is great information TechDiver,  thanks.   I am looking forward to this mod on my Bee.    Especially because no one has the tail motors in stock any way.   Now I have an excuse to mod it!
I am not really flying presently, not quite yet.  I refer to what I do as "controlled crashing"

The collar with the allen grubs goes to the inside.

I have been asked about part numbers for this mod, so here they are:

Motor: EK-002445

Tail Motor Heatsink: EK-002447

Tail Rotor Kit: EK-002386  (this includes the tail motor mount screws)
