HK 450GT
« on: May 08, 2012, 09:20:54 AM »
hi there guys.

hows the week so far?

anyway under announcements i posted that im looking for a new heli. i mentioned before in SA we dont have many places and when we do find a place or at the hobby shops they are highly priced.

but last nite browsing the net i found out that we have a hobbyking here in SA. kinda far from where i live but i can get it posted.

so i wont llike to know if someone could take the time to explain to me on what parts i should get to build the kit up.

im planning on getting the HK450GT full alloy :125:.

what parts more do i need?
why must i get these parts?

i would prefer to build a good heli one time that will able to fly 3D. nothing to serious though.

what servo's, gyro's battery, motors, esc, pinion gears?

i was told to get 3x 9g servo's and 1x digital servo's. what do they do? is this correct?

thanks guys

Hi
Welcome to the money pit world of heli's
If you want to build a quality heli you should buy the best parts you can afford .
If on a budget then try to at least buy a good tail servo and gyro and maybe save a few $$ in other areas.
For servos you need 3 for cyclic control , these move the rotor head left, right , forward, backward for directional control as well as up and down to control pitch.
The other servo controls the tail , this is where you want to go good quality and fast speed
Cyclic servos can be as simple as HXT900 plastic gear ones http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__662__HXT900_9g_1_6kg_12sec_Micro_Servo.html or you can use more expensive metal gear ones that will survive a crash better .
There are a lot of good tail servos , I use the Inolab 261HB Carbon Gear Servo http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__10522__HGD_digital_261HB_Carbon_Gear_Servo_20g_06sec_2_4kg.html
I found the cheap gyros like the HK401B did not hold the tail very well so I bought a Spartan Quark http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__10484__Spartan_Quark_MEMS_AVCS_Gyro_V2_02_Black_.html HK has the best price I have seen for these and if you want to move up to 3D you will need a good gyro.
For motor something like this will do to start you of http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9021__Turnigy_Typhoon_450H_2215H_Heli_Motor_3550kv_450_class_.html or this
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11172__Turnigy_450_H2218_Brushless_outrunner_3550KV.html
Combined with a 13T or even 11T pinion they should do the job.
You will need an esc minimum 40 amp , a lot use the turnigy plush esc's http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__2165__TURNIGY_Plush_40amp_Speed_Controller.html
You will need 3.5mm bullet connectors as they do not come fitted to the esc/motor and some 5mm heat shrink to insulate them after soldering (I hope you can solder) http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__68__PolyMax_3_5mm_Gold_Connectors_10_PAIRS_20PC_.html
If buying batteries from Hobbyking they will have XT60 plugs fitted so you will also need a XT60 male plug to solder on your esc.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9572__Nylon_XT60_Connectors_Male_Female_5_pairs_GENUINE.html
For batteries the most common used are 2200mah 3S with a minimum 20C discharge rating (higher C rating is better but 20C will be fine until you want to push things a bit further)
Nanotech batteries are good quality  http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11944 but basic Blue turnigy will be ok
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8932__Turnigy_2200mAh_3S_20C_Lipo_Pack.html
You will need a 6 channel reciever to match whatever tx you are using
It is a good idea to stock up on spares like main gears , main and feathing shafts , flybars and paddles ,tail shafts , main and tail blades etc that way if you crash you dont have to wait 4 weeks for more parts to arrive.
You may not be able to get all the parts from your regional warehouse and may need to make a second order from the main warehouse in Hong Kong
It is also good practice to use stainless steel screws as the HK ones can be low quality , you can get kits made by  RC Screwz . I found some on ebay.
Also get some blue loctight for the screws
If you take the time to look around the forum you will find lots of build threads with heaps of info
Its 2am and I got to go to bed now so I will let the others finsh off the list if I have missed something  and add their suggestions as well

Hi Kesh,
The feathering shaft is what holds the two main blades together.
The shaft fits into the blade grips and is fastened with a cap screw inside the grip.

I didn't notice if you had a decent tool kit or not, but you will definitely need one. Look for a kit on HK
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11048__Turnigy_Long_Shaft_4pc_Hex_driver_set.html

And a pitch gauge for obtaining the correct pitch in your main blades
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11044__Turnigy_R_C_Helicopter_Pitch_Gauge_.html

God luck with your build. There'll be more responses, I'm sure.

HK922 Digital Metal Gear Tail Servo
3x Power HD-1900A Cyclick Servo's
Battery Turnigy 2200mAH 3 cell 20-30c

Remote - flysky 9x(this is very expensive)

so guys what you think on this combination?

will i be able to fly 3D with this set up? eventually!

The stuff HK recomended is fine but if you want performance then I would go with the gyro I recomended .
The HK 401B is not that good . Not sure on that tail servo as I have not used it
You will still need the connectors and heat shrink

hi Wizzard.

I'm getting a better gyro for sure... whats your take on the HK GA250 mini MEMS gyro?

HK USA also recomended that tail servo.

i also found a turnigy E500 6T 4000kV 200w 450 size motor, is it any good for my set up? or should i just stick to the H2218 3550kV motor?

now, im close to ordering the stuff, is it hard to set up?

I've been reading the manuals and watching the video's... still will like to know if its difficult. im still learning and dont understand all the parts and joins just yet.

thanks

The HK GA250 mini MEMS gyro that I bought failed after less than 20 flights . Lucky for me it was while spooling up on the ground that the heli went into a fast piro and not when it was in the air.
At the time there where a lot of bad reviews starting to appear on the website with others having a similar fail .
HK removed those bad reveiws not long after they were put up.
Could have just been a bad batch and the problem was fixed .
When it did work it was quite good , not as good as the spartan quark but better than the 401B.
That motor should be ok but on a higher kv motor you will probably want to use the 11T pinion . Its hard to judge a motor without using it , I bought 2 motors of the same kv rating and one would bog down under load a lot more than the other.
Set up is not easy but not that hard you cant do it ,take it step by step . Is this your first ever heli ?

 :hi: kesh,

Just trying to help out here so some general topical information might be help.
HK will recommend anything that has their name on it.
They copy - ie clone - other brand name stuff and put their name on it. Turnigy might be an exception on some of their items. They make it cheaper with lower quality items and are able to sell it fo r less money - in most cases, a lot less money. So that effects the quality of the stuff you buy from them.
If you are buying things without a lot of moving parts, like blades and flybars and such, it may not matter. However, if you're buying things like gyros and servos, it might mke a big difference.

That said, I have purchased many things frm HK and for the most part they have been good. I will continue to buy from them as well. But just know that there is a reason the HK 401B gyro which is supposed to be a Futaba GY401B clone, sells for $12 and the Futaba sells for about $150.

Hi there.

Not my 1st heli, I do have a coaxile 5G4 walkera. I did replace some stuff, like the gears and inner shaft. Not hard. But its a very basic heli. This to me seems kinda complicated.

But I don't mind giving it a try. HK wants R500 to build and set up. That's why I would like a step by step guide. Save the R500 towards a transmitter.

The more and more I read on the net, the more and more I get confused.

Thank you for your help, and please do keep it coming. I'm really new to these. I don't understand much parts and how things work. So I'm trying to get all the info I can then buy and build.

I'm stressing about building it up.
I'm not looking to do 3D flying, but when I master the flying I will try. That's why I want to get a 450 now. I also think the 450 will handle abit of wind and make flying a lot easier.

Thanks for all your help. Just wish I had a place in Durban, where I live to help out. The normal hobby shops are just trying to sell me something.
