Pricing up a quad
« on: March 13, 2012, 01:49:53 PM »
Hey,

After reading some of the other threads on here, I've decided to price up a quad. Im coming from a total beginners viewpoint, so im looking at building a cheap quad to learn how to fly.

It would be nice to have the option to carry a small compact camera (about 150-200 grams), to film whilst flying.

I've based the components off rattys excellent thread, cheers for the info! I want to price up a complete build, every nut and bolt included! That being said, I do have a wealth of nuts and bolts in the garage, but I will still need all the other parts :)

Props: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10055&aff=61689
Controller: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21977__HobbyKing_Multi_Rotor_Control_Board_V3_0_Atmega328_PA_.html
USB hookup: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21321__USBasp_AVR_Programming_Device_for_ATMEL_proccessors.html
Motor  x4: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=6247&aff=61689
ESC x4: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__2168__TURNIGY_Basic_18A_v3_1_Speed_Controller.html
ESC programming card: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=2169&aff=61689
Transmitter: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8992__Turnigy_9X_9Ch_Transmitter_w_Module_8ch_Receiver_Mode_2_v2_Firmware_.html
Frame: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__22397__Turnigy_Talon_Carbon_Fiber_Quadcopter_Frame.html

Battery: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__19716__ZIPPY_Flightmax_8000mAh_3S1P_30C_DE_Warehouse_.html
Now im not too sure what would be an optimal battery for a quad. I've seen some builds with 2 attached, is this worth doing?

I also know Ill need some buts to hold the props onto the motors (I dont know what the proper name is though?!).

Also, is this the right thing to warn me if the batteries are low? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18987

Any other things I've missed out, or would you change some parts out for other things? Im sure Im missing a bunch of electronic bits :)

Thanks for any help!

Hello GOURA  :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :138: :138: :138:
Your list looks good You will also need a frame! Are you going to build one or buy one?
You may want to ask RATTY about the speed control/s I am not 100% sure, I used speed controls from a different place.
You may need some extra wire and some connectors (some speed controls have them some don't)
If you are going to build a frame build it as light as possible!
My 1st one is way over weight! but I am able to get 5 minutes of hovering around the yard.
Oh yes the items you said you didn't know the name (prop adapters you will need 4MM) and if you use them you will have to cut the motor shaft's.
The shaft's are also threaded 4 mm buy some of the props have bushings that may or may not work!
I am sure others will jump in and help!

Looking good Goura.  :130:

ESCs are good, thats what i use. Battery alarm is correct. The things that hold the props on are prop adaptors or prop savers. They are diffeerent but do the same thing, i prefer adaptors.  :130:

You will also need wire and connectors like RCR said. Servo extensions or the parts to build your own.

Good sites in the UK for prop adaptors is: http://www.4-max.co.uk/

For props: http://www.electricwingman.com/

For wire: http://alshobbies.com/shop/cat.php?id=332

Any questions feel free to ask and ill try my best to help.  :130:
