Need Help With New ESC Install
« on: January 19, 2012, 04:53:44 PM »
First let me thank everyone that offered advise on my problem with a brand new Belt CP. In my first post I stated that I had purchased a new belt cp and that during the very first trial run I stripped the main gear and the ESC stopped working. I had set the heli up per Nutcaze and was truly pissed when a brand new ESC stopped working as they are junk right out of the box. My new ESC is here and I do need assistance with the install. I wired the new ESC just as the old one(the new one is a Hobbywing Platinum Pro 40A) and installed the battery. Well something needs adjustment because all I'm getting now is a series of beeps and tunes with no power to the motor when the transmitter is turned on and throttle is applied. Any help about what I should do to set this unit up would be great and thanks.

JT

When you connect the battery, is your throttle and throttle trim all the way down?

If not, the ESC will most likely go into Programming Mode. In this mode you can setup the ESC by counting the beeps and moving the sticks on the Tx... But this should be in the manual...

Hey thanks for the responce, yes the trim on both are down. I'm in the process of trying to count beeps to see what is needed. No luck yet.

 :hi: JT,

QMav is prolly right. If, when you first power up the ESC and the throttle and throttle trim is not at 0, the ESC will go into programming mode.
I use the same ESC as you and they are quite easy to program. Just follow the directions in the little brochure. It all sounds confusing, but if you take your time and read thru it a couple of times it's pretty easy.
More than likely, you just need to set your throttle range and you'll be okay.
Remove your blades in case. Some recommend disconnecting the motor, but you need to hear the beeps.

Next I would rebind the TX/RX. Make sure your throttle and throttle trim is down. After rebinding, make sure to remove the bind plug..

Then set your Throttle Range according to the instructions: (this is kinda sorta straight from the little brochure)
Switch on the transmitter, and then move the throttle stick to top position. Not to worry, nothing will happen.
Then connect battery pack to the ESC, a special tone “♪123” emits that means the battery supply is OK, then wait for 2 seconds  -- NOTE: The ESC uses a series of beeps to guide you thru the programming. Sometimes they are used singly in series all in the same tone evenly spaced and sometimes in series using different tones unevenly spaced to form a kind of tune --
After the 2 seconds pass, you'll hear a “Beep-Beep-” tone emits, that means the highest point of throttle range has been correctly confirmed.
Then, move throttle stick to the bottom position. You should here three “Beep-” tones representing the number of Lipo battery cells (In your case, three beeps)
Finally, a long “Beep—” tone emits, means the lowest position of throttle range has been confirmed.

Then you're done. Unplug the battery. shut down the TX and try it again.

Post back and let us know how it went.
If you like, I can make a vid with the sound and all to help, just let me know. This stuff is always fun to do especially now with snow on the ground and crappy flying weather..

Hey I just wanted to note that with the battery plugged in to both ESC and Motor, with the T/M off I'm getting a single beep with a flash from the gryo.

Hi jt,

By "rebind" I mean when you first introduced your TX (T/M as you call it) your radio to your RX (receiver), it's called "bind" -ing your heli. It may not be necessary, but I just wanted to start form square one.

The single beep and flash means your motor and gyro are getting power, but no signal from your TX. And why would you do that anyway :happyno:

The normal start-up progression is the musical tones 123 in a rising scale, then three beeps corresponding to the number cells in your lipo, then one long beep. At this point your tail might twitch a little.

When you referred to the "N" is that something in your instructions? Cut and paste some of it here if it is.

I guess I should start over with the explaination on the new ESC and a reason it may not be working for me. I do have the new platinum 40A but I don't have a program card or box. I was under the impression that I could program this ESC with the TX. Is this not the case?

Do you have a manual? In there it is totally explained how to program the ESC with the TX.

It is possible to program it with a TX. It is a bit harder than with a program card, but not impossible..  :130:

One last shot in the dark. SOMETIMES the throttle channel is backwards. In other words, when you power on with the throttle all the way down, the RX / ESC sees it as all the way up, and goes into programming mode. If you put it all the way up, the ESC sees it as all the way down.

You MIGHT have to reverse your throttle channel, then try turning on the model.

Brilliant Gene!

If you don't have the instructions, I can email you a copy of the instructions if I have an email address. And it really isn't that difficult to program with the TX. You just have to listen to the beeps.

Hey thanks Rumblecloud that would be great. I do have the manual, but it just runs through the cycle of beeps. When I try to save a set point it just keeps running. If you have possible instructions that would be great. jtrown@yahoo.com. I'll try what Gene T ask me to do as well.

 :hi: Jt,

Just sent it. Hopefully it's more informative than what you have.

And really, really hopefully Gene's suggestion will solve it.

Hey thanks for the help guys. Lets face it I'm new to this. I bought the new heli hoping I could learn as I go, and for it to never even get off the ground before it bombed stinks. I'll keep at it though.....
